Pleitez campaign cites failure to recuse himself from billboard vote in their complaint to city ethics
LOS ANGELES – Yesterday evening, the Emanuel Pleitez campaign manager, Erin Fair, filed a complaint against Councilmember Eric Garcetti with the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission for voting to give a legal settlement to Clear Channel Outdoor and CBS Outdoor. Clear Channel Outdoor is a Clear Channel Communications subsidiary that Garcetti owned 200 shares of – at an estimated $2,000-$10,000 – at the time of his vote.
According to the complaint, “records show that Clear Channel Outdoor donated $500—the maximum amount allowed—to Councilman Garcetti’s officeholder account in 2006 on the day prior to his vote in favor of Clear Channel Outdoor on their settlement.
City Councilman Eric Garcetti should have recused himself from the vote because he had a reasonably foreseeable financial interest at stake in the City Council’s decision on the Clear Channel Outdoor settlement. His vote… represents a conflict of interest as per the Fair Political Practices Commission regulations.”
Councilmember Garcetti and another mayoral candidate, City Controller Wendy Greuel, have both come under fire in the last few weeks as the March 5th election approaches. Garcetti has turned up the heat on Greuel, which now appears to have been intentional, distracting the public from the skeletons in his own closet.
“Councilmember Garcetti tries to portray himself as so ‘holier than thou’, but the more you dig the more dirt you find. Whether it’s accepting anti-immigration dollars then surrounding himself with immigrants or using the City of Los Angeles to financially benefit a company he owned stock in, then claiming it was a big misunderstanding, it’s all smoke and mirrors. This represents everything that’s wrong with LA politics” said John Hill, Communications Director for the Pleitez Campaign. “Changing his mind doesn’t make it right, it makes him indecisive and irresponsible.”
Pleitez is a former technology executive, with public, private, and non-profit sector experience, and was appointed to manage President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. Pleitez, an LA native, grew up on the eastside and currently lives in El Sereno with his wife, Rebecca.
