EMANUEL PLEITEZ SUPPORTERS PROTEST MONEY-BASED EXCLUSION OF MAYORAL CANDIDATE FROM LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS DEBATE
Pleitez supporters stage walkout of televised mayoral candidate debate on ABC 7
LOS ANGELES – Fifty supporters of Emanuel Pleitez gathered in front of the Aratani Japan America Theater last night to protest the candidate’s exclusion from the League of Conservation Voters debate televised on ABC 7. Inside the debate, fifteen supporters stood up in protest and walked out while chanting, “Let Pleitez debate.”
The League of Conservation Voters excluded Emanuel Pleitez from the debate on the grounds that he did not raise $200,000 by the September 30th filing deadline despite Pleitez having outraised included candidate Kevin James in that quarter and having more cash on hand than James by the deadline.
Pleitez has received the support of over 1,000 people for his inclusion in the debate, many from underserved areas in South LA, East LA, and the East Valley. Supporters signed an online petition, posted photos and voiced their support.
“I’m running to make sure all voices are heard in our city. My team and I walk the streets and talk to people every day. I understand our city’s problems and the solutions better than the other candidates. Fixing our problems starts with listening to everyone. It’s a new LA and we need a new way of thinking,” said Pleitez.
Since July, when Pleitez entered the race, the campaign has:
- Made more than 80,000 phone calls to Los Angeles voters
- Knocked on more than 15,000 doors
- Opened 2 offices (Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles)
- Polled 5th in LMU's exit poll, with 2/3 of voters undecided
- Collected over 1000 signatures in support of Pleitez being on the March ballot
Pleitez is a former technology executive, with public sector, private sector, and non-profit experience, and was appointed to manage President Obama’s Economic Recovery Team. Pleitez, an LA native, grew up on the eastside and currently lives in El Sereno with his wife, Rebecca. For full bio, please visit www.pleitezforla.com
